Vince Lombardi is one of the most special figures in the National Football League (NFL) , the most important American football league on the planet , which this year celebrates its 100th season . This man, the son of Italian immigrants born in Brooklyn, is remembered for having been a coach for the Green Bay Packers for nine seasons, a team he led to win five NFL championships, including Super Bowls I and II.

Before Lombardi came to the team that catapulted him to fame, his predecessor was Ray “Scooter” McLean , who left the team in December 1958 after a series of dismal results that had the Packers mired in mediocrity: 1- 10-1, the worst campaign in its history. On the day he was introduced, Lombardi said, “I’ve never been associated with a loser and I don’t expect to be now.” Lombardi (June 11, 1913, Brooklyn, New York) was a complete unknown until before he took over with the Packers: his experience was limited to five years as running backs coach for the New York Giants . Prior to that he was a teacher at St. Cecilia High School in New Jersey and head coach of the high school football team . He also served as the offensive line coach for the West Point team. Between 1959 and 1968, Lombardi became the most historic of the Packers’ coaches: he had a tremendous record in the regular season, 89-29-4, and 9-1 in the postseason . On September 3, 1970, Vince Lombardi died of cancer at age 57 while he was head coach of the Washington Redskins, his second team as a professional coach. In recognition of his figure and career, the Super Bowl trophy was named after him at the request of then-commissioner Pete Rozelle.
