She was born on February 2, 1905 in Petrograd , Russia.

A week before her twenty-first birthday, she left the Soviet Union, never to return. The communist regime expropriated her father’s business and killed her family.

Ayn met director Cecil B. De Mille who gave her work as an extra on his film King of Kings , as well as advice on becoming a screenwriter in Hollywood.



Between her work as a writer and as an assistant in a film studio, she began an affair with an actor named Frank O’Connor. In 1929 they married, remaining together until his death in 1979.

Her career as a professional writer began in 1932 with the sale of a screenplay, Red Pawn , which was never produced. However, the income from her sale allowed him to quit her hated job as an assistant in the wardrobe department and focus full time on her writing.

In two years she had completed a novel and a play, in addition to her many short stories.

The liberals called it reactionary, the conservatives revolutionary, the communists pro-capitalist and the Church an atheist. By her own convictions she was, in the middle of this century, far removed from the more accepted intellectual currents, and she had practically no allies.


He defined the essence of his philosophy, known as Objectivism , with the following four pillars:

1) Metaphysics: objective reality; 2) Epistemology: reason; 3) Ethics: interest in oneself and 4) Politics: capitalism.
She herself put this definition into simpler words:
1) In order to control nature, you have to obey it, or better yet, desire will not make it happen.
2) You can’t eat the cake and have it at the same time.
3) Man is an end in himself.
4) Give me freedom or kill me.

Her most important work was ” Atlas Shrugged ” which sold millions of books and is one of the best sellersthat most influenced the lives of Americans according to a survey by the Book Club of the Library of Congress of the United States. “Whoever is in favor of a free society,” he says, “must understand that its indispensable foundation is the principle of the rights of the individual,” which are “the means of subordinating society to the moral law.”

In his essay « The Rights of Man», the Russian philosopher maintains that the most profoundly revolutionary achievement of the United States of America was to achieve that subordination. For Ayn Rand, there are two potential violators of human rights: criminals and the government. «The great achievement of the United States -she affirms- was to draw a distinction between the two, prohibiting the second from the legalized version of the activities of the first. The Declaration of Independence established the principle that “to secure these rights governments are instituted among men.”

Ayn Rand died in New York on March 6, 1982.
