Religion quotes are everywhere in the news. The topic of religion is now big business. Many well-known authors and entertainers have created lines of verse about religion. Most people know them by name, such as: “oughties,” ” prayed for,” “revelations,” “god is love,” etc. Some of the more famous ones are: Benjamin Franklin, Robert Ingersoll, Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Martin Luther King, Jr.
One of the best known religion quotes is a quote by Martin Luther King, Jr. where he states: “I have a dream that one day, all the religions of the world will cease to exist.” I agree with him. I also dream of the day when all the religions of the world will cease to exist because there is only one true religion, and that is love. When we stop blaming others, look within ourselves, and start to forgive everyone and everything for the wrong doings of the past and turn out good every day.
Another of the most well-known religion quotes is from Sri Chinmoy; “If you want to live in peace, avoid violence. If you want to live in harmony, learn to forgive those who damage you. If you want to live in love, give love to others. If you want to know what it is to have faith in a supreme being, embrace knowledge. If you want to live harmoniously with all mankind, then you should follow the example of Swami Vivekananda.”
Not many of the bible religion quotes I have read so far to discuss the importance of forgiveness. The Bible clearly lays out guidelines for how to behave on moral issues. There are several verses for those who refuse to take the commandments found in the word of God. Those who refuse to obey the laws of the bible should be aware that they will suffer for their sin. Those who are religious are also fully aware that they have been given a divine order, and no amount of effort or good intentions can change that.
When reading about religion, we must also understand that not following the holy words found in the bible, or the religious writings that outline such laws and ethics, can result in eternal suffering. There is hope, however. Through the process of learning and growing, we can learn to adapt to changing times and situations, while still retaining our core beliefs. In order to make us better people, we must make sure that we are following the teachings of the bible and the examples set forth by those that came before us.
Buddha, the famous Indian Buddhist monk and author is quoted as saying, “I was once a Hindu, now I am not a Hindu.” Buddha is an example of how accepting and loving our religion can change our lives for the better. Of course, listening to Buddha’s teachings is not enough, it is necessary to apply them in our lives in order to be enlightened. Reading Buddha’s works is another great way to keep himself grounded, however; the main essence of these works are on how to develop meditation to reach enlightenment.
The quote above by Buddha shows how accepting certain beliefs, and eventually changing ones can affect our lives for the better. Even if the original religion that we grew up with is no longer practicing, there are things we can do to at least carry on the traditions. These principles include learning the basic definitions of the holy words of any religion, learning what these words mean in action, and following the exact teachings as instructed. We can make ourselves better people by following the example of the great men and women from our past. Who taught us what is the best way to act? Who followed the rules that were handed down through generations?
Albert Einstein, the famous scientist and thinker is quoted as saying, “I do believe in religion, but I am not a religious person.” The thing that Einstein’s words brought out was the fact that religion is not something we are born with, but rather something that we adopt as the society around us evolves over time. In every generation, different religions arise and eventually become the main source of attraction for most people. It is up to each of us to choose which one we believe in, because according to Einstein, the choice is always the right one.

“For those who believe in God, most of the big questions are answered. But for those of us who can’t readily accept the God formula, the big answers don’t remain stone-written. We adjust to new conditions and discoveries. We are pliable. Love need not be a command nor faith a dictum. I am my own god. We are here to unlearn the teachings of the church, state, and our educational system. We are here to drink beer. We are here to kill war. We are here to laugh at the odds and live our lives so well that Death will tremble to take us.”
― Charles Bukowski

“Religion has actually convinced people that there’s an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever ’til the end of time!
But He loves you. He loves you, and He needs money! He always needs money! He’s all-powerful, all-perfect, all-knowing, and all-wise, somehow just can’t handle money!”
― George Carlin

“Sometimes the Bible in the hand of one man is worse than a whisky bottle in the hand of (another)… There are just some kind of men who – who’re so busy worrying about the next world they’ve never learned to live in this one, and you can look down the street and see the results.”

“No sight so sad as that of a naughty child,” he began, “especially a naughty little girl. Do you know where the wicked go after death?”
“They go to hell,” was my ready and orthodox answer.
“And what is hell? Can you tell me that?”
“A pit full of fire.”
“And should you like to fall into that pit, and to be burning there for ever?”
“No, sir.”
“What must you do to avoid it?”
I deliberated a moment: my answer, when it did come was objectionable: “I must keep in good health and not die.”
